| Movies Topic! The topic name says it all. Wherever we may be, we all have seen a favorite movie, or have seen an ad for a movie that have enticed us to go spend outrageous pricing to see it. Anyways here you can do some of the following:
New Releases: This is talking about anything about to release or those that have came out that you either watched or want to watch.
Personal Favorites: Talk about movies you loved and want to share here.
Critics' Corner: Provide a summary of the movie and whether you would recommend it or not.
A few rules to abide by:
1. No double posting
2. No using bad language. If you must, use ** to cover the full word.
3. If the movie is rated R, please make sure to SAY SO so others are aware of that fact
4. If you provide a picture along with the movie, make sure it doesn't contain nudity, foul language, and/or gore
Anyways, that's about it and have fun posting and sharing movies~

| Interesting topic, good idea can't believe no one thought of it earlier. I usually watch a new movie every Friday (not today though) so I'll start sharing those if they were any good. Right now...I don't feel like picking one... @Red: Can never go wrong with classic Jurassic Park, the movie that inspired many kid's interest in dinosaurs...and inspired my FEAR in them since I watched for the first time at 7 or 8 and didnt like people getting eaten...now i like the movie of course

| Topic Revival!
Since I am bored and I didn't want this topic to be forgotten I'm going to start adding my list of movies and such weekly here. I will start with movies that I recently reviewed followed by ones I hope to see in the future.
Blue Valentine (Rated R)
Overall 9/10 Storyline 8/10 Drama 10/10 Love/Romance 8/10 Action 5/10 (Not an Action Film) Actors 9/10
Honestly the first time I heard about this movie, it peaked my interest because not only was it a love story, but a dark and twisted plot - although it was an indie film (which I'm not a fan of) I waited until I could rent it on Itunes. It honestly didn't disappoint. But at the same time it wasn't the movie I was expecting either. Previews and reviewers made this story sound like a soft girl meets boy rememberance story and such but it was far from that. The story's lead characters are Dean (Ryan Goslin) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) who watch their marriage of several years start to deteriate because of the lack of romantic attraction, lack of communication and Dean's lack of inspiration to achieve much. To salvage their marriage they take a vacation to a hotel away from their lives but along the way, Cindy meets with her ex-flame Bobby (Mike Voguel) which sets off Dean who is controlling and protective of Cindy and especially against Bobby. Cindy could never relax at the hotel - there are scenes where Dean trys to calm Cindy down and to have her relax like the care-free spirits they once were - but she cannot stand the in-her-face constant attention from Dean and refuses to participate. The movie reveals flashbacks of Dean who is a young man who lands a job at a furniture moving company. He falls instantly for Cindy one day while glancing at her from across a room while helping unpack another's belongings. He tries to woo her but she ultimatly swats his advances. She at that time was datting Bobby - a college athlete who only took advantage of Cindy and who allowed him thinking it was love. Dean doesn't back down as he continues to follow Cindy, trying to win her over. There are nice scenes like when Dean plays the ukalailai and she tap dances in front of a store. It flashes back to the married couple. Cindy wants to get away from Dean - Dean is fighting to keep Cindy with him. She finally gives in and gives herself up - but Dean refuses stating that he wasn't going to take advantage of her. It flashes back to Cindy finding out she's pregnant and more than likely it was Bobby who she had left and never told him of the child. Scared and unsure what to do, she was thinking of abortion, but the pain physically and emotionally was too much. Dean then decides to support both Cindy and the child knowing he didn't have to commit to Cindy. They get married and that was the last flashback. Cindy leaves early for her work and Dean is still in the hotel. He follows her to work and tells her he was concerned she left him without calling. Cindy finds out that the doctor she assists (since she's a nurse) was only offering her a new job to take advantage of her. With her whole world shattering in front of her eyes, she doesn't know what to do. Dean comes to her aid and punches the doctor but doesn't get the gratitude he was expecting. Fed up Cindy yells to Dean she wanted a divorce and flings their wedding ring into the forest around them. He searches for it crying - wondering what he did wrong. When they return home to pick up their little daughter, they argue in the kitchen -- her communicating how she hated how Dean could be so lazy and uninspired. Dean retailates how he gave them both shelter, provided her child with a father (which he was good at) but at the same time he cries and tells Cindy he's sorry -- that he'd change and find a job and love her endlessly but it wasn't soon enough. Cindy watches Dean leave -- a saddening scene where he walks down the street alone, the daughter calling out to her dad and him not responding, her yell shrill with confusion and fear as she runs towards her father who she adored. The scene ends with him telling her to go back to her mom, and he walks away.
The character of Dean was interesting. Here was a guy who was partly dillusional. Not only that, but the transition from being a young guy who wins over Cindy through charm, and care, love and excitment. Seemed like everything they once had was compromised after the wedding and child. Although Dean didn't finish through high school, that was the part that made sense as to why he was not inspired to pursue a job after Cindy had a child. At times he was a stalker -- when he was young and following Cindy to win her over, that was purely innocent and determination. But after marriage, he didn't give her that freedom to be alone for some time. He pushed her to do things she didn't want. He defended her when she didn't need defending. Sometimes marriages are not entirely about being together every second, it's about two lives working as one but at the same time being able to be independent. The only good quality Dean had, was his parenting skills -- he was a good father to his daughter. Cindy on the other hand was someone who didn't know what she wanted when it came to a relationship. She was planning to get into medical school to become a doctor but was derailed by the pregnacy and her inability to choose for herself the relationship she wanted. She gave in to Bobby knowing all he wanted was to sleep with her. She gave in to Dean because of the way he pursued her. The inability of moral strangth was what lead Cindy through the sad life she was in. Even years after, she was still being sought by her own doctor that she assisted just to be taken advantage of -- evident that had she not not dated either Bobby or Dean she wouldn't have been dragged down and would be a doctor instead of a nurse with no doubt a better life and husband.
In some aspect, this is a love story. But on the other hand, this isn't. It evaluates the choices we make in life and the people who come into it. Sometimes we think it's love when it's only a physical attraction -- or maybe a few qualities that relate. But really the choices we make determine our future and those we make because we are pressured to make lead to nothing but disappointing results. Those actions and decisions we make for ourselves will lead us towards the goals we wish to achieve. The marriage between Dean and Cindy was made through lust and immaturity and parts of pressure from the pregnacy. Also, love stories don't always end up with happy endings - it is the tale that moves the audience but when it comes down to it -- not every love story ends up being the one we hoped for. That was my review of Blue Valentine - one of my favorite movies so you can see that I wrote an extra extensive review of it because I like it so much.
Crazy, Stupid, Love
This seems like a movie worth watching. I think it has a few good actors in it that would get me to go watch it, such as Steve Carell playing the lead characted Cal, Ryan Goslin (also played in Blue Valentine) playing as Jacob and of course one of my favorite actresses Emma Stone playing Hannah. Supposibly the movie follows the life of Cal who is living the perfect life but it's shattered when his wife ends the marriage. Being that he is single in a new era of dating, he has trouble adjusting. He meets Jacob, the smooth guy who knows the right moves and he helps Cal but at the same time Jacob is confused on how to win over Hannah -- a girl who doesn't give in to his ways. Of course with any Steve Carell piece, there will be a lot of humor involved. Ryan Goslin will play the same character he's done from the Notebook to Blue Valentine -- the young, smooth, determined to win over the girl guy. Overall a movie worth watching I think. And also one that doesn't focus on the 3D aspect - God, I hate those movies; not only are they expensive for a worse experience then a regular film, but they're just dominating every movie now! Good thing this won't be shot in 3-D so I recommend it! | |
